A Bariatrician is a licensed physician who, as a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP), has received special training in the medical treatment of overweight and obesity and its associated conditions. Bariatricians use a comprehensive program of diet, nutrition, exercise, lifestyle changes, and when indicated appetite suppressants and other appropriate medications. A physician-supervised weight loss program may be the fastest and safest way to lose weight and maintain the weight loss. Should I see a Bariatrician? The National Institute of Health (NIH) recommends a physician-supervised weight loss program if: - You are trying to lose 15 to 20+ lbs.
 - You are taking medications.
- You are planning to take medications to lose weight.
What type of diet will I use and how much weight can I lose? The New Self program uses a very low calorie diet (VLCD), using calibrated replacement meals and supplements. The average dieter can expect to lose around 3 to 5 lbs. per week with minimal discomfort and virtually no loss of energy. These results are 2 to 3 times greater than those resulting from conventional diets. Patients put on a VLCD must have a complete work up by a physician trained in the clinical use of VLCDs, and should be monitored closely. Our program not only results in significant weight loss, but also gives you the tools necessary to maintain the weight loss over time, allowing you to become a healthier, fitter and thinner person for life. The New Self Program at a Glance Our medical weight loss program consists of 12 weeks of intensive nutritional, behavioral and physical activity interventions, requiring weekly visits to the office.. During each visit you will be assessed for any physical or emotional problems that you might encounter with the program. A set of biomarkers will be obtained at each visit including weight, BMI, blood pressure, pulse, waist circumference, % body fat, and total body water. During the 12-week program two measurements of your basal metabolic rate will be made, with an additional one after week 18.
We will do a weekly review of our food and exercise dairies, and give you a behavioral modification reading assignment. It is important that you use your Program Weekly Log to annotate on a daily basis your food, supplements and water consumption, exercise, behavioral modification reading assignment, and finally your mood and hunger levels. The New Self Program uses a very low calorie diet (VLCD) strategy which will accomplish a weight loss 2-3 times greater than other conventional diets. In order for us to control your calorie intake and insure that you are getting your daily nutritional requirements, you will be using exclusively calibrated meal replacements, as well as a series of supplements that will help you stimulate your metabolism, give you energy, improve your mood, decrease your appetite and provide you with all the essential nutrients and vitamins.
